Academic Writing Instruction
Programs that provide classes, individualized instruction or other opportunities for people who want to develop or perfect their ability to prepare essays, reports, term papers, exam essays, abstracts, literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, academic proposals or dissertations, or engage in other types of academic writing that demonstrate a person's ability to research a concept and apply ideas, theories, concepts or principles learned or studied to a new situation. Most forms of academic writing involve stating a thesis and making an argument to support it citing facts, statistics, examples, reasoning, expert testimony, results of studies, appeals to commonly held values and/or, in the case of essays, the writer's ideas, opinions and personal experience to further illustrate, develop or explain the main idea. A review of the literature on a particular topic, a bibliography or an annotated bibliography of references used may also be required.
